Interpretation of The Rich Brother by Tobias Wolff - Essay Example Much as he behaves in the story, I conjured up the image of a selfish, mean, and rude guy with a lot of money for Pete. The facts of the story that led me to draw this image of Pete in my mind were his distaste for Donald’s act of giving away his $100 that he expressed by throwing Donald out of the car and not even realizing how bad he has behaved. Instead, Pete says to Donald, â€Å"you’d better go† (Wolff 12), thus deceiving himself that he does not need Donald. Pete has the audacity to nod to the music in his car after throwing his brother out of it. While the overall impression of Donald was that of a good guy without money, I missed out some of the most important underlying messages in the story like the real meaning of being rich unless I had discussion about this story with my friends. After discussing the story’s interpretation with my friends and listening to theirs, I reached the conclusion that the story contains some very important messages tha t make it more meaningful and sophisticated than I had presumed. My friends came up with their own opinions and conclusions they had drawn from the story, all of which sparked a number of questions in my mind; who of the two brothers is really rich; the one with more money or the one with the better character? Does Donald really need Pete to make a living or is Pete really in need of somebody with a high character like Donald? Is money so powerful that it deprives man of all sensitivity, sensibility, and humanity? Does money do that to everybody or there was something very wrong about Pete that it did that to him? These and many more questions were discussed with the peers. Comparison of the two interpretations has led me to the conclusion that when we read something and interpret it by ourselves without consulting anybody, we are likely to adopt a biased approach toward interpreting it so as to draw the meaning that we want out of it. We approach the reading in a certain way and th ings seem to make sense that way. While we definitely have a viewpoint, we tend to overlook, if not completely ignore, various other meanings that can be derived from the same reading. The state of mind in which we read a story plays a decisive role in what conclusions we draw from it. In order to get the most out of a reading, it is advisable to discuss the story with peers so as to get their opinion. While the best results can be achieved if all peers have personally read the story at least once, the reader should at least summarize the story to the peers so as to ensure that everybody gets to know about it even if he/she has not personally read it. When I discussed the story and my interpretation of it with my peers, not only that practice exposed me to a variety of themes, ideas, moral lessons, and conclusions hidden in the opinions of my peers, but I also noticed a widening of the horizon of my own thoughts. The practice opened my mind and I also came up with new conclusions th at I might not have been able to do alone. The strengths of personal interpretation include surfacing of a well-defined opinion of the reader that might be unique, sharpening of mind as one ponders over the facts of the story alone without anybody’s guidance or help, and maximization of learning as no other activity is as strong as building memory and interpretation skills as personal interpre

It is a process of hospital management in which new partnerships between healthcare professionals who are specialized in various aspects occur. Professional integration would better help to utilize medical and information systems. The introduction of professional integration or integrated care pathway (ICP) would involve a lot of changes. A study was conducted by the Wagner School of Public Service (1997) on the implementation of an integrated health organization policy (involving professional integration) in the HealthPartners of Southern Arizona hospital. The type of approach utilized was an expanded professional model (EPM). The findings of this model were studied so that integration can be utilized on a more extensive scale. The various aspects that were integrated included a hospital, a healthcare plan and two physicians. It was found that the integration process transformed the healthcare system and brought about positive changes in management and clinical work. Professional integration involves provision of healthcare by a team. Responsibilities are shared by different professionals who work in the team. Each of these professionals would be have their own sub-cultures, and in total, all these sub-cultures would be aligned. In the study, the benefits were clearly demonstrated, and also there were a few limitations existing which were solved using certain recommendations. Professional integration would produce certain innovative ideas which could be utilized in providing outpatient, inpatient and community healthcare services. Professional integration involves the physician taken the responsibility of leader, helping to provide and manage the treatment of the patient. Once the physician leads the patient care of team-based healthcare professionals, the quality of care would improve and the responsibilities can be shared in a more appropriate manner. The organization having greater amount of professional integration would gain a competitive edge over other organizations. The organization should look into the various ways in which various professionals can be integrated, and accordingly implement them. Once there is greater amount of professional integration, automatically clinical integration would occur, which can provide even greater number of advantages. Other organizations need to consider the expanded professional model (EPM) approach study conducted by the Wagner School of Public Service, and accordingly implement them after reflecting individual characteristics. One of the most important requirements for professional integration is a workstation for the users (healthcare professional) so that efficient and prompt transfer of patient health information occurs. The user should be able to access information of the patients assigned to them. The system should have user-friendly software programs which would enable entry, modification, processing, storage and transfer of patient health information. Each user should be able to view the tasks assigned to them. Such an electronic system would provide prompts, reminders and alerts for the user thus ensuring that better clinical decision-making can be enabled, and improvements in the quality of care are seen (Degoulet, 1995 Goes, 1995).

The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare is a tragic story of two â€Å"star-crossed lovers† (prologue) fighting against time and their families for their love. This story is a prime example of what young couples should not do which is, fall in love to fast. Romeo and Juliet knew each other for less than a week when they fell in love and got married. Shakespeare used many instances of time and haste during this story. â€Å"The opening scene of the play establishes the pace at which tragic fate will unfold.† (Driver, 488). Romeo, who had just gotten dumped by Rosaline, was devastated. Then he met Juliet at a party and â€Å"No sooner does Romeo see Juliet than he falls in love with her.† (Shavi, 511). Later that evening Romeo met Juliet and she says she is in love with Romeo even though they know their families hate each other. â€Å" Their love is instant and mutual and before dawn they are betrothed.† (Shavi, 510). Three instan ces of time in haste in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet are: how quickly Romeo and Juliet fall in love, how quickly the pair married, and how quickly they die for each other. â€Å"Like all young people, Romeo and Juliet are uncertain and hasty in their first encounters with the problems of reality.† (Ribner, 474). Romeo and Juliet might have been in love, but they never had a chance to fully love one another, because they were together for only a short period of time. The only people that know about their love were the Nurse and Friar Lawrence. The nurse, who sided with Romeo and Juliet being together in the beginning, quickly changed her mind and told Juliet that she go ... ... each other. Second they know they would have tried to break the two up, which would have made them want to kill themselves, because they two constantly talked about dying for their love. Lastly the hatred between both families would have driven them apart because they would have gotten forbidden to see each other. As soon as the families found out about them, they realized there fighting was stupid and caused the death of their children. To sum up the whole story Romeo and Juliet’s love never had a chance because time was not on their side and neither were the two families. The young couple thought that everything would be solved if they hurried up and got married and that is what they did and it ended in disaster. This story, by William Shakespeare, is a perfect example of how falling in love quickly can be good in some instances and bad in others.

Why I avoid social interaction

Over the last few days I have been trying to find out why I avoid social interaction. Usually, I don’t feel comfortable to meet new people. After meditating for sometime I found out that this problem was not an issue that came up in one single day but has developed over a number of years. I therefore went further to think about my past life and the experience that may have led to this kind of behavior. This essay analyzes these experience and their theoretical explanation using psychological eye. My mother is a teacher while my father is a doctor. They are both hardworking and have achieved a lot in their professionals. They always show me some of the medals they were awarded for their good performance in their respective institutions. Apart from that, I have attended and witnessed them receiving the awards. The most significant instances included a ceremony where may father was named the doctor of the year after carrying out a surgical operation which was thought to be too complicated and difficulty to perform. Just a month later, I witnessed my mother receiving a present as the teacher whose subject was best performed in that year. I was so moved by these two occasions that I promised to work hard and become a doctor like my father. One thing I didn’t like in these ceremonies was that particular moment when my parents introduced me to their friends. I was normally filled with fear and shyness. My parents also realized that I was having a very difficulty time whenever we attended such occasions. We all discussed about my problem. They told me that even when I was young I was not only afraid of strangers but also shy. They concluded by telling me that this reaction would not stop all of a sudden but would even continue in the future. They both agreed that this may be the reason why I was uncomfortable whenever I met new people. Back in my school, meetings were often held to evaluate the performance of the students. This was done to ensure that every student did well in examinations as well as to find out, if any, the problems why some students didn’t perform well. Those students who performed poorly in exams were punished and ridiculed. They were even nicknamed. On one particular day I was almost about to fall under this category of students. My parents were annoyed and cautioned me about the kind of friends I had in school. I was promised a present if I improved in school. I had to dedicate more of my time in studies. I used to spend most of my leisure time in watching movies and soaps. Though I didn’t like this at first, I had no alternative since my family and I had moved to this country in which I was quite unfamiliar with. I eventually came to love watching the T. V and currently I prefer this to going out and meeting new people. I usually spend most of the afternoon watching the TV and I have come to associate evenings with watching the TV. The presents my parents received motivated me so much that I had to set my personal goal of being like them or even doing better. A child personality is usually shaped by their personal interaction with their parents and forces which are unconscious. According to Maslow â€Å"the inner need to fulfill one’s potential† which he referred to as ‘self actualization’ is a process that continues all though one’s life. In other words, it is not only applicable to childhood but also across on individual’s lifespan (Slater A, Bremner G, 2003, pp. 57-58). I always felt I that I would only achieve ‘self actualization’ at that time when I will become a doctor and I had to give more time to my studies then going out to meet new people. Psychoanalytic theory (Maslow theory of self actualization) is the reason why I always worked hard to become a doctor. However the theory may not explain my behavior since I have already changed my mind about my future career and I no longer long to be a doctor. My parents’ explanation about my behavior can be traced to trait theories where our actions in childhood are supposed to be manifested even when we grow old. On the other hand this may not explain my behavior since not all what I did in my childhood is manifested in my current life situations (Ewen R, 1998, pp109). Watching some students being punished and humiliated in front of their schoolmates forced me to work even harder to avoid the same. My parents’ reaction to my poor performance and their promise to reward me mounted pressure on me to spend more time in studying. Social learning theory is the reason why I spend more time in books and discouraged me to meet new people. I learned how grievous it was to fail in school by â€Å"observing behaviors of others and outcomes of these behaviors† (Bandura A, 1977, pp. 21-23) However some of my classmates still go out to meet new friends and their performance in class is excellent. Others spend more time studying and perform poorly so this may not be the reason why I avoided social interactions. Watching the T. V came to be part of my life even though I didn’t like it at first. classical conditioning is the reason why I long for the evenings because I love to watch movies and songs. According to Pavlov P. , conditioning implies to that â€Å"process where neurological patterns become sufficiently established to make a response† and there must also be reinforcement (Cropps R, 1986, pp. 98). I no longer watch TV in the evening. From the theory of classical conditioning the evening can can be taken to represent the conditioned stimuli while the Tv soaps and movies represent the unconditioned stimuli. I enjoyed watching the Tv in the evening so much and an evening always reminded me of the soaps and movies. This theory may also not sufficiently explain my behavior because though I no longer watch the Tv in the evening, i still don't like going out to meet new people. All the theories discussed above do not sufficiently explain my behavior even though they may be part of the explanation. I still don't have a concrete explanation of my behavior up to date.

Human beings prospered and progressed over time because of his inquisitive nature and the ability to explore. Discoveries and inventions helped them to know more about the mother earth and made them to make their stay on this planet more comfortable. Needs and necessities of different ages and times encouraged humankind to come up with new inventions, however, some inventions simply originated to serve the whims and fancies of some men in authority who abused their influence and knowledge to invent something which put a questionmark on mere existence of human race on this planet. An invention without which this world would be a much better place is the invention of weapons of mass destruction also known WMDs. A weapon of mass destruction is a nuclear, radiological, biological, chemical or other weapon that can kill and bring significant harm to a large number of humans or cause great damage to man-made structures (e.g. buildings), natural structures (e.g. mountains), or the biosphere. These weapons were developed initially by industrialized nations liks United States, Japan, Germany etc as a weapon of self defence to deter the enemy against any possible aggression and attack (Deterrence theory of international politics). However, in due course of time these weapons emerged as a threat to the very existence of human race on this planet. The deterrence theory failed to prevent wars and battles between nations and rather led to beginning of an arms race between nations. India and Pakistan, 2 south asian neighbours developed nuclear weapons in 1998 but still had a war in 1999 and still have skirmishes on their borders on almost daily basis. The application of nuclear bomb by United States against Japan, use of chemical weapons by Germans against Jews in concentration camps made the world to realize the ferocity and dangers of these weapons. More recently, the use of Chemical weapons in Syrian Civil War had brought the world to brink of another war when US tried to int ervene in order to maintain the sanctity of Chemical weapons convention. The world have realized the uselessness of these weapons and tried to control, ban and regulate their usage through conventions and treaties like Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BWC), Partial Test Ban Treaty, Outer Space Treaty, Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Seabed  Arms Control Treaty, Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT, has not entered into force). These weapons not only are capable of killing millions of lives but also affect future generations, cause irreversible and irreparable damage to environment, drain resources of nations on non-productive activities. Secondly, there is an imminent threat of misuse of these weapons by terrorist organizations and anti-human elements that can use it to kill thousands of innocent lives. Threat of possession of such weapons was a major reason for US attack on Iraq. Thirdly, such weapons lead to power struggles and pose a danger to establishment of world peace. Fourthly, even poor nations spend a considerable amount of their scarce resources on production and storage of these weapons instead of using these resources for the welfare of their poor and undernourished citizens. Thus, based on the arguments above we can easily conclude, this world would have been a much better place, had there been no weapons of mass destruction. After all, the ever more sophisticated weapons piling up in the arsenals of the wealthiest and the mightiest can kill the illiterate, the ill, the poor and the hungry, but they cannot kill ignorance, illness, poverty or hunger. Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men. It is the spirit of men who follow and of the man who leads that gains the victory. It is high time that the world shall bid goodbye to WMDs and make this world a much better place to live in. This scene is where the senior drill instructor, played by a real Marine drill instructor, is introduced. He walks around the room yelling at his recruits., and giving them comedic nicknames. The main characters of the movie are introduced at this time. Private Joker is named by the drill instructor because of his out of line John Wayne imitations (Listen heyah, Pilgrim), Cowboy is nicknamed because he is from Texas and as senior drill instructor said, Only steers and queers come from Texas. The next character is only shown in act one because he commits suicide at the end of act one. H is nickname is Gomer Pyle. As you can imagine, Gomer Pyle is an overweight klutz. One year after graduation, I expect to be a pharmacist in a retail pharmacy. This is useful in me gaining experience by accepting responsibilities as a pharmacist. Five years after graduation, I expect a pharmacy manager in a retail store. This will be achieved through hard work, teamwork and helping new members in adapting to their new environment. Finally, ten years after graduation, I expect to be a regional pharmacist manager or intern coordinator. With experience and proficient in executing my job as a pharmacist, this type of leadership will put me in a position to give back to the profession. As an intern coordinator, I will stand a chance to be able to mentor and lead pharmacy students. Step 2: assessing my leadership qualities There are many assessments that had a greater effect into my life but the six most important assessments to me are self-confidence which entails: generalized self-efficacy, leader-member exchange, motivation to lead, influential tactics, emotional intelligence and participatory leadership attitudes. Generalized self-efficacy is an important attribute which shows the importance of having self-confidence for one to be an effective leader and leader emergence. Self-confidence is important to leaders as they show one’s ability to believe in being successful and be able to influence others to achieve a common desired goal or results. Generalized self-efficacy can be strongly manifested in an individual with high self-confidence which has an end-result of strong and effective leadership. In the assessment, a score of 6 represented a strong sense of generalized self-efficacy and a low score of say 2 shows a weaker sense of generalized self-efficacy. Faced with different situations, I have a capacity to succeed as evidenced by my high score of 5 since it indicates a strong sense of efficacy. I chose this assessment because of the score and I have the belief I have that, I will succeed and whatever am doing will produce a desirable result faced with a situation. Leader-member exchange is another assessment I chose because I it assesses the pros and cons of a follower while being supervised. In this assessment the quality of relationship exchanged between the leader and member is taken into account, a score above 6 shows a high quality and a low-quality relationship is shown by a lower score than 2. I have a score of 5.43 which shows my relationship with a leader was of high-quality. Motivation to lead is the assessment I also valued because it contained dimensions on what motivates one to lead. A high score say above 6 in all the dimensions shows a strong motivation to lead and a weak motivation to lead as indicated by a low score, say below 2. My scores in this assessment were 4.2, 4.11 and 4.7 which were relatively high and indicate that I love the role of a leader and like giving directions to my followers. An example of evaluating is after the Year 8 disco, was the year 8 pupil’s filing out an evaluation form on how they thought the event went. There are many different ways to evaluate such as minutes of meeting, questionnaires, post-event papers and circulation list. Minutes of meeting Meetings normally have formal minutes attached to them or they have notes. When taking minutes of a meeting the information given and any actions that need to be taken are recorded so that what is needed to happen before the next meeting does. Minutes need to be told to the people attending ASAP so that they can look through them, check that it is accurate and carry out any actions if needed. The main advantage of minutes of meeting is that more of what is needed to be said is said this is good because everyone’s ideas can be shared. Another advantage of minutes of meeting is that everyone who is needed is there so that no one misses out on the information that has been given. The final advantage of minutes of meeting is the privacy, this is good because the information said will only be between the people who are present in the meeting. There are also disadvantages to minutes of meeting they are that everyone present in the meeting may all have disagreements this may lead to not having what is needed to be done, done. Another disadvantage of minutes of meeting is that people present may be shy and won’t feel like sharing their ideas. Questionnaires are designed as a way to find out what people are thinking. An advantage of questionnaires is that it is very practical because it is quick to collect information from the people filling out the questionnaire. Another advantage of questionnaires is that the same questions is asked to everyone filling the questionnaire out so easy to sum up. The final advantage to questionnaires is that large information can be collected. There are also some disadvantages to questionnaires which is that there is no way of telling how much though someone who is filling the questionnaire out has put it. The final disadvantage to questionnaires is that there is no way to tell how truthful a respondent is being. As a way of evaluating the Year 8 pupil’s event, we created questionnaires for the Year 8 pupils who attended to fill in. This helped us because the information we had been given back told us why they enjoyed the event and what they thought could have gone better. It was important for us to create questionnaires for the year 8 pupils, so we know how well our planning of the event went, and also to know what went wrong. It also helped us to know what to do and what not to do if planning another event. Because of post-event reports it is becoming very common to share post-event reports For planning the Year 8 pupils event we did not use any post-event reports because it would not work as we invited all of the Year 8 pupils to the event. If we did use post-event reports than it would be useful to us as it would be away of informing the Year 8 pupils what the event is and what sort of stuff is on offer at the event. Circulation lists A circulation list is a way of giving out information to delegates who attend the past event. The event is a useful way of engaging delegates to attend more events by the holder. Because of this it is becoming more often to have e-lists, or email lists that can be used to send information to the delegates. There are more ways that event organisers can put a circulation list which is through a website with a password so that previous delegates can access. An advantage of circulation list is that you have a list of people who are certain to attend all other events which are being held by you. However a disadvantage to circulation list is that it takes time having to create a website to make an e-list. When planning the Year 8 pupils event we did not use a circulation list invite a certain number of pupils to the event. If we did use circulation lists then it would be useful because if we had another chance to plan an event, then there would be a number of pupils who would definitely attend. Overall, evaluating can contribute to future planning of events by many different ways. Using questionnaires is the easiest way to evaluate information. This is because instead of evaluating at the end of something you can also evaluate at the beginning and find out information of what people want. By doing this you would find out information about what the attendees are looking for in the event, by knowing this planning the event will be easy because you know what is wanted. Using a circulation list as part of your evaluation is also good because it means that you already have people who are certain to attend. This will mean not having to worry about no one showing up. Taking minutes at meetings is very important so that everyone is participating knows what they are doing and everyone knows what they need to do by the next meeting. If no minutes at meetings were taken than the people planning the event will all get confused on what is needed to be done, which means nothing will be done to make sure the event is successful. In conclusion to evaluation it is very important to do after anything that has been done. This is because it informs you on how well something happened and how it can be improved. It was important we did an evaluation for the Year 8 event because we wanted to know how the pupils attended found it, if they enjoyed it or if they did not. Evaluation helps a lot because if wanting to plan another event you will know what to do and what not to do for people to enjoy.

The reason for education is an incontestable topic. According to article 40 of the Quebec Charter of Human Rights and Freedom, everyone has a right to free education and as of 1871, education for children between the ages of 6-16 became compulsory in Canada. Having practiced playing school during their childhood, schools for children are a symbol of growing up; and for the parents, are viewed as a rite of passage and entry to the child’s future career (Diskin, 2010). However, most believe that the greatest achievements of life are their educational titles. Thus grades became the measure of a child’s success or failure in his young life. Consequently, efforts to help students obtain better grade in various educational institutions and levels emerged and tutoring business services were born. Over the past decade, the tutoring industry has undergone a massive growth an increased in popularity. It was even described as flourishing according to CTV’s Ken Shaw (The growing business of tutoring students, 2002). Tutoring classes no longer concern just academic subjects but now includes sports and dance lessons. In 2007 a report by the Canadian Council on Learning (CCL) sparked interest and controversy about the private tutoring sector in Canada when it announced that a third of Canadian parents (33%) have hired a tutor. This reinforced the findings of a 2005 study which determined that approximately 25% of Canadian parents hired a tutor, and the 2007 OISE/UT Biennial Survey which found that 24% of Ontario parents have used tutoring (Aurini, 2008). Furthermore, the number of formal businesses that offer fuller tutoring services has grown between 200%-500% in major Canadian cities over the past 30 years, a growth that is independent of public school enrollments or economic trends (Davies & Aurini, 2004). In Ontario for example the number of businesses grew from 250 to just under 500 locations between 1996 and 2005. While these figures are impressive, they do not capture the vast network of more casual, part-time tutors who service thousands of students on a regular basis. However, even using conservative estimates, all research suggests that we are witnessing the birth of a tutoring revolution in Canada (Aurini, 2008). However, due to changing times, the biodiversity in the Redwood forests are being threatened particularly by illegal logging. Historically, illegal logging started over centuries ago as early as the Spanish colonization and still a continuous practice in the 21st century. Since then, almost 95% of the redwood forests had been destroyed (Berry). Moreover, illegal logging is caused by overpopulation and increase in demand for natural resources. Because of these demands, virgin forests are turn into urban housing to accommodate the growing population and timbers are being utilized for profit. As a result, the various California species are being endangered to the brink of extinction. If this will not be taken care of immediately, the ecosystem of the Redwood forests will soon be destroyed which can adversely affect the natural cycle of existence. To prevent this from happening, several actions must be facilitated such as information campaign, boycott and conservation efforts. The public needs to be aware of the current situation of the Redwood forests in order to educate and at the same time invoke their interest in saving the Redwood. More so, through the boycott of the products of companies that abuses the Redwood forests, people can help in decreasing the need for natural resources produced by trees and animals living in the Redwood forests (Gapsucks. org).
